Only accessible by watercraft or helicopter, the Michipicoten Island East End Light Station is remotely situated on the northeast corner of Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior, approximately 60 kilometres west of Wawa, Ontario.
The one-hectare site boasted a small metal debris dump; various structures including an unmanned lighthouse constructed in 1911; as well as remnants of previous constructions such as foundations from a former radio beacon building, fuel storage shed, boathouse, and family dwelling.
Our experts were contracted to address the presence of lead-based paint on the exterior surfaces of all structures, and to remove debris from the site. Additionally, any asbestos-containing material found beneath lead-based painted surfaces or within the debris required abatement in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
By implementing systematic abatement procedures, our experts ensured the safe removal and disposal of hazardous materials—optimizing the safety and well-being of individuals while minimizing disruption to the surrounding environment.
Strict adherence to protocols was vital on-site due to hazardous materials present. The deterioration of lead-based paint in existing structures raised significant concerns, as it can contaminate nearby soil and release lead particles, posing health risks to both people and the environment, with airborne lead concentrations worsening exposure risks.
At Rosho, we prioritize reducing our ecological impact and promoting environmental sustainability in every aspect of our work. Equipped with the necessary certifications, including LEED, we are committed to environmentally responsible practices as well as comprehensive safety training—ensuring our workforce is always well-prepared for any task.
